Pressure Treated Decks and Outdoor Structures
This is the most common material used to build decks. It is treated pine so it resists rot and termites. It is the least expensive material to use for building a deck. Decks made from pressure treated wood last an average of 10-12 years. You do need to stain/seal it every 2-3 years.
Composite Decks and Outdoor Structures
This material has become very popular in the last few years for its low maintenance properties. It is made of plastics and wood fibers. It does not need staining and no warping or splinters. It comes in many colors so design can be more elaborate. Composite is more expensive than the cost of pressure treated wood but will last 20-25 years and very little maintenance.
Ipe Wood Decks and Other Outdoor Structures
This is the top of the line material for building a deck. It is a very hard wood that will last forever. It is more expensive than composite. Ipe is a Brazilian hardwood and require special fasteners and installation techniques. This type of wood must have an oil applied to it regularly.
